Sustainability is ingrained in the culture of Forest City Enterprises. It is one of Forest City's eight Core Values, or philosophies, upon which the company is built.  The Core Values serve as a guide for how Forest City conducts business, builds relationships and engages in new opportunities.  Forest City's Core Values represent the principles and ideals that have helped shape the company over its 80-year history, as well as those values that have evolved over time.

Sustainability is an important part of how Station Square operates.  It is a principle to which the property is deeply committed.  We strive to balance social systems, environmental resources and economic objectives the so-called triple bottom line of people, planet and profit.

Even before sustainability became a hot topic in our society, Station Square began to lead the way for our region.  Our original developers, the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, took a decaying railroad site and developed on the largest adaptive re-use properties in our region's history with the creation of Station Square.

More recently, Station Square strives to continue to re-think how we operate in order to help reduce the use of natural resources.  Here's some highlight of recent initiatives:

All six levels of the Landmarks Building offices have undergone a ballast retro-fit to convert the building's lighting from high energy consumption fluorescent lighting to energy-saving low wattage lighting.  Almost 1,000 lighting units were replaced in order to reduce the energy consumption from this office building.

Annually Station Square produces over 40,000 tourism brochures to advertise the property to out-of-towners.
In 2007, two major changes were made to this program:
(1) we developed an e-brochure so tourists could simply view the publication on-line
(2) all printing of this brochure is being done with paper that is made out of 50% recycled materials and printed on with vegetable based inks.

Even new Station Square businesses are getting into 'Going Green.'  Photoscape by Joseph Balena created a low energy design and renovation at One East Station Square Drive.

All original fixtures at the site were removed to make way for more efficient fluorescent fixtures and lights. The original overhead lights alone would have consumed approximately 1200 watts of power. The complete inside lighting now uses only 1/6 of that or about 200 watts of total power.  The exterior sign utilizes an ultra thin neon configuration, which in addition to being very attractive, draws only about another 150 watts.

All the internal photographic equipment, flash systems and computers run on DC with converters so that they only draw trickle current while recharging the power packs. Power when needed is then drawn from the batteries.
